ECI Issues Notification for Jubilee Hills By-Poll, Voting on November 11

The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday officially released the gazette notification for the much-anticipated Jubilee Hills assembly by-election, setting the stage for the electoral process to begin. According to the schedule, candidates can file their nominations until October 21, with scrutiny scheduled for October 22 and the last date for withdrawal of nominations fixed for October 24. Voting for the by-poll will take place on November 11, while counting of votes is slated for November 14. Nominations will be accepted at the Office of the Returning Officer in Shaikpet, Hyderabad.

The by-election was necessitated following the demise of BRS MLA Maganti Gopinath in June this year due to a cardiac arrest. The high-profile contest has drawn attention across Telangana, with the ruling Congress announcing V. Naveen Yadav as its candidate and the BRS fielding Maganti Sunitha, widow of the late MLA. The BJP is yet to declare its nominee, leaving speculation rife about potential candidates. Political observers believe the by-poll outcome could be a key indicator of public sentiment ahead of the next state elections, making Jubilee Hills a crucial battleground seat.

To ensure a transparent and secure voting process, the ECI has introduced several modern measures for this by-election. These include the use of colour photographs of candidates on Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), Artificial Intelligence-based surveillance, and GPS-enabled monitoring of sensitive polling stations. District Election Officer RV Karnan has instructed officials to strictly adhere to the Election Commission’s procedures and ethical standards. The by-poll is expected to witness a strong voter turnout as parties intensify their campaigns in one of Hyderabad’s most politically active constituencies.
