In a significant step toward fulfilling the state’s housing promises, Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy on Tuesday, April 15, launched the first phase of the Indiramma Housing scheme by distributing Rs 1 lakh cheques to eligible beneficiaries. Under this ambitious initiative, the state plans to provide Rs 5 lakh per house to land-owning applicants and build dedicated Indiramma housing colonies for landless families across villages and mandals. Unlike the older 2BHK scheme, which focused on government-constructed units, the Indiramma scheme allows beneficiaries the flexibility to design and construct their own homes in stages, with funds released in four installments aligned with construction milestones. A minimum of 400 sq ft land and inclusion of essential amenities like a kitchen and toilet are mandatory to qualify.

The government has introduced a strict four-tier verification mechanism to ensure that the scheme reaches the most economically disadvantaged. This includes local Gram and Ward Sabhas, a random 5% verification via mobile app by Mandal or municipal officers, district-level vetting by officials appointed by collectors, and an advanced AI-driven 360-degree verification. This meticulous process underscores the administration’s intent to prevent misuse and ensure transparency in the distribution of resources. The state has set an ambitious target of constructing 4.5 lakh houses within a year and 20 lakh homes in four years, focusing on both rural and urban poor. Already, 474 sites have been earmarked for housing construction, with work underway in mandals across districts like Adilabad, Bhadradri-Kothagudem, Mahabubabad, Asifabad, Khammam, Nagarkurnool, Nizamabad, and Vikarabad.

Each mandal headquarters will see 500 homes built under this scheme, symbolizing a structured rollout of housing infrastructure statewide. The government has reiterated that those who own land will directly receive the Rs 5 lakh in stages, enabling them to construct homes tailored to their needs. Meanwhile, landless beneficiaries will be accommodated through community housing colonies, ensuring no section is left behind. The Indiramma Housing Scheme is being hailed as a landmark effort in Telangana’s social welfare roadmap and a visible departure from the top-down approach of previous housing initiatives.
