Canada Discontinues Popular Student Visa Program for International Students

Canada has discontinued its Student Direct Stream (SDS) visa program, effective November 8, citing the need to “strengthen program integrity” and ensure equal access for all students. The program, introduced in 2018, expedited study permit applications for students from 14 countries, including India.

The SDS program offered faster processing times and higher approval rates. Its discontinuation means students from eligible countries will now undergo the regular, lengthier visa process. This decision comes amidst Canada’s efforts to address its housing and resource crisis.
