Bengaluru has been brought to its knees by unrelenting rainfall over the past 36 hours, causing severe disruption across the city. With five rain-related deaths reported, including two tragic cases of electrocution in BTM Layout, residents are grappling with knee-deep water, power outages, and paralyzed traffic. Sai Layout, among the worst-affected areas, resembled an island, where ground floors of many houses were submerged. Rescue teams evacuated around 150 people, while BBMP distributed food and water, but citizen anger continues to grow due to delayed civic response.

Heavy waterlogging near key tech corridors like Manyata Tech Park and Silk Board Junction brought traffic to a halt. The IMD recorded 105 mm of rainfall between Sunday night and Monday morning, issuing an orange alert for Bengaluru as more heavy rain is expected. Infrastructure woes were further exposed as potholes resurfaced and walls collapsed, leading to casualties. A 35-year-old woman died under debris while cleaning in Mahadevapura, and a children’s orphanage in Hennur had to be evacuated by disaster response teams.

The India Meteorological Department warns that urban areas like Bengaluru, due to high concretisation, are at greater risk during such rainfall. Alongside Bengaluru, several other districts in Karnataka including Mangaluru and Karwar reported significant rain and lightning-related fatalities. Authorities have urged people to stay indoors, disconnect electronic appliances, and avoid contact with water bodies. With the city still recovering, pressure mounts on civic agencies to respond efficiently and ensure such chaos isn’t repeated in future weather events.
