A deadly attack on a Pakistani military convoy traveling from Quetta to Taftan has left at least seven soldiers dead and 21 injured, according to official Pakistani sources. However, the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), which has claimed responsibility for the attack, alleges that the death toll is far higher, with as many as 90 Pakistani military personnel killed. The attack reportedly targeted a convoy consisting of seven buses and two military vehicles, marking one of the deadliest strikes by Baloch insurgents in recent years.
Pakistani security officials stated that the attack was carried out using a combination of explosives and rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs). One of the buses was completely destroyed after being hit by a vehicle loaded with improvised explosive devices (IEDs), in what is suspected to be a suicide attack. Another bus was struck by RPG fire, causing significant casualties. The convoy was reportedly moving through a volatile region when it came under heavy assault, prompting immediate retaliatory action by Pakistani forces.
The Baloch insurgency, which has been active for decades, seeks greater autonomy and independence from Islamabad, citing issues of political oppression and economic exploitation. The latest attack underscores the rising tensions in Balochistan, a region rich in natural resources but plagued by ongoing conflict. While Pakistani officials downplayed the insurgents’ claims of a high death toll, the scale of destruction indicates a major security challenge for the government. Authorities have launched an investigation and intensified security measures in the area to prevent further attacks.
