External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is set to embark on a two-day visit to South Africa starting February 20 to participate in the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting. This high-level gathering will see representatives from the world’s leading economies discuss pressing global issues, including economic recovery, geopolitical tensions, climate action, and sustainable development. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced that Jaishankar will engage in discussions aimed at strengthening multilateral cooperation, fostering inclusive economic growth, and addressing the challenges faced by the Global South. His participation underscores India’s commitment to playing a proactive role in shaping international policies and promoting global stability.
Apart from attending the main sessions of the G20 summit, Jaishankar is expected to hold several bilateral meetings with his counterparts on the sidelines. These discussions will focus on deepening India’s ties with key nations, exploring new trade and investment opportunities, and addressing regional security concerns. South Africa, as the current chair of the influential G20 grouping, is playing a crucial role in facilitating dialogue among member states. Given the ongoing geopolitical shifts and economic uncertainties, this summit is seen as an important platform for India to articulate its strategic vision and push for a more equitable global order. The minister’s visit comes at a time when India is strengthening its diplomatic engagements across Africa, emphasizing partnerships in technology, healthcare, and capacity building.
Jaishankar’s trip to South Africa is part of India’s broader foreign policy strategy to enhance its influence in multilateral forums. Over the past year, India has actively engaged with global stakeholders through forums like the G20, BRICS, and the United Nations, advocating for a rules-based international system and fairer representation for developing countries. With India being one of the fastest-growing economies, its stance on trade policies, digital transformation, and climate resilience is gaining traction in global discussions. The G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting is expected to lay the groundwork for key agreements ahead of the G20 Leaders’ Summit, making Jaishankar’s visit a significant diplomatic engagement for India.
