The family of Sanjoy Roy, convicted of raping and murdering a female medic at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital, has accepted the court’s decision with heavy hearts. Sanjoy’s 70-year-old mother, Malati Roy, stated that if her son is guilty, he should face the full extent of the law, even if it means capital punishment. Speaking from her modest home in Shambhunath Pandit Street, she expressed deep sympathy for the victim’s mother, acknowledging her pain and pledging not to contest the verdict. Malati admitted she had refrained from attending court hearings or visiting her son during his trial, as she trusted the judicial process to deliver justice.

Sanjoy’s sister, who wished to remain anonymous, echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing that their family had no plans to appeal the conviction. She revealed that while Sanjoy struggled with alcoholism, the family was unaware of any violent or criminal behavior in the past. Acknowledging the public stigma the family now faces, she urged for a thorough investigation to ensure that any accomplices are also held accountable. “We believe in justice, and if others were involved, they too should face the consequences,” she said.

The case has sparked widespread outrage, prompting protests by junior doctors across West Bengal who demand increased safety measures for female medical staff on hospital premises. The tragedy has highlighted systemic issues in ensuring the safety of women in workplaces, particularly in healthcare.
