5.3-Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Telangana, Tremors Felt Across Hyderabad

Telangana experienced a rare seismic event on Wednesday morning as a 5.3-magnitude earthquake struck Mulugu district at 7:27 AM, sending tremors across Hyderabad and parts of Andhra Pradesh. The National Center for Seismology (NCS) confirmed the epicenter’s coordinates (Lat: 18.44° N, Long: 80.24° E) at a depth of 40 km. While no immediate casualties or significant damage were reported, residents were left shaken, prompting experts to advise caution and preparedness in the aftermath of the quake.

The tremors extended beyond Telangana, reaching parts of Maharashtra including Nagpur, Gadchiroli, and Chandrapur districts. Residents in these areas reported light tremors, with local officials urging calm and preparedness. Chandrapur Collector Vinay Gowda emphasized vigilance and recommended moving to open spaces during potential aftershocks. The India Meteorological Department noted that quakes of this intensity could have effects up to 300 kilometers from the epicenter.

Telangana, classified as a low-intensity seismic Zone II, rarely witnesses such events, making this quake noteworthy. An X user, Telangana Weatherman, highlighted that this was the strongest earthquake in the region in 20 years. Similar incidents were recorded recently in Assam and Jammu and Kashmir, underscoring the need for heightened awareness about seismic safety across India.
