Islamabad Under Lockdown as Imran Khan’s PTI Plans Protest March

Ahead of the highly anticipated protest march organized by Imran Khan’s party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), the Islamabad government has implemented stringent security measures to prevent any unrest. PTI, led by the incarcerated former prime minister, has called on the public to join the march with the aim of “breaking the shackles of slavery” and demanding justice. In response, the government has deployed heavy security forces, sealed off key roads, and set up barriers around the capital, emphasizing that no protests will be allowed in Islamabad according to court orders. The government also issued warnings of legal action against anyone who attempts to disrupt public order.

Despite these measures, PTI remains committed to the protest, with party leaders, including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, strategizing for the event. The march is set to demand the release of Imran Khan and other party leaders, the revocation of the 26th constitutional amendment, and the restoration of judicial independence. The protest coincides with the arrival of a large Belarusian delegation, and the government has warned of potential security threats. In preparation for the protest, authorities have suspended train services, restricted public transport, and imposed Section 144 in Islamabad and Punjab, prohibiting any gatherings. The government has also partially suspended internet and mobile services as a precautionary measure.

The ongoing political tension between PTI and the ruling coalition government, led by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), has escalated in recent months, particularly after Imran Khan’s ouster in 2022. Khan’s party, which secured the most seats in the February 2024 elections, continues to allege that the ruling parties “stole” the mandate in the polls. The protest is seen as a critical moment for PTI to rally public support and challenge the legitimacy of the current government, while also calling for a restoration of democracy and freedom in the country.
