The survey of Shahi Jama Masjid in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal district was successfully conducted on Sunday morning under heavy security. Ordered by the court following a petition by Advocate Vishnu Shankar Jain, the survey sought to investigate claims that the mosque was built by Mughal emperor Babar after allegedly demolishing the Harihar temple. The process, lasting from 7:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., included photo and video documentation. The findings are set to be submitted to the court on November 29.
Despite tight security arrangements, tensions flared during the survey as protesters gathered near the site. Some resorted to stone-pelting, prompting police to use lathi-charge and tear gas to restore order. Several arrests were made during the incident. Authorities, including Sambhal District Magistrate Rajendra Painsia, clarified that the survey was conducted during non-prayer hours to avoid disruption, with cooperation from the Jamia Committee. Advocate Jain urged the public to remain calm and have faith in the judicial process.
Leaders from the Muslim community, including All India Muslim Jamaat Chief Shahbuddin Razvi Barelvi, called for peace, urging the public to refrain from vandalism and ensure harmony in the district. The incident underscores the ongoing sensitivity surrounding heritage and religious sites in India.
