The Aligarh Muslim University Teachers’ Association (AMUTA) welcomed the Supreme Court’s judgment affirming AMU’s right to seek minority status. AMUTA termed the decision “historic,” reaffirming AMU’s unique character and inclusive educational aspirations.
The Supreme Court’s 4:3 majority verdict overturned the 1967 judgment, establishing tests for determining AMU’s minority status. Professor Faizan Mustafa hailed it as a “comprehensive win” for minority rights. Historian Dr. Rahat Abrar praised the judgment for validating AMU’s historical identity.
The case will now proceed to a new bench. AMUTA expressed gratitude to lawyers, alumni, and individuals instrumental in securing the outcome, reaffirming faith in India’s judiciary and constitution.
