Centre Clears ‘One Nation, One Election’ Proposal ?

The Indian government has taken a significant step towards synchronizing the elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies to a single schedule. The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has cleared the proposal for ‘One Nation, One Election’. This move aims to reduce the frequency of elections, which are deemed to hinder the country’s progress.

The ‘One Nation, One Election’ Bill is expected to be introduced in the upcoming winter session of Parliament. This concept was first proposed in the 1980s and has been advocated for by the Justice BP Jeevan Reddy-headed Law Commission. In fact, simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies were held in 1951-52, 1957, 1962, and 1967. However, the cycle was disrupted due to premature dissolution of assemblies.

The opposition has expressed concerns, with parties like Congress, Aam Aadmi Party, and Shiv Sena opposing the move, alleging it’s an attempt to replace the parliamentary system with a presidential one. Meanwhile, the BJP has pitched ‘One Nation, One Election’ as a promise in its manifesto for the general elections. The proposal’s fate will be decided in the winter session of Parliament.
