Centre Warns TV Channels Against Misuse of AI in News Broadcasting

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I&B) has issued a strong advisory directing all private satellite television channels to exercise extreme caution while using artificial intelligence (AI) in news production and programme broadcasting. The ministry emphasized that AI should only be used as a supporting tool and must never compromise the accuracy, authenticity, or sensitivity of news content. It reminded broadcasters that all content must strictly comply with the Programme Code under the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act, 1995, warning that any violation could invite regulatory action under the existing legal framework.

The advisory comes amid growing concerns over the increasing use of generative AI and other AI-powered technologies for creating graphics, virtual news anchors, and television programming. According to the ministry, broadcasters remain fully responsible for maintaining editorial standards regardless of the technology used. It stressed that AI-generated content must not distort facts, mislead viewers, or present inaccurate information. The ministry also noted that an inter-departmental committee had found several telecasts that failed to uphold the spirit of the Programme Code, raising concerns over repeated violations across multiple television channels.

The government further instructed news channels to carefully select panelists for debates and discussion programmes to prevent the spread of communal, inflammatory, abusive, or anti-national content. Broadcasters have been advised to use safeguards such as muting offensive remarks, displaying warnings and disclaimers, or discontinuing live feeds whenever necessary to prevent objectionable material from reaching viewers. The ministry said these measures are essential to ensure responsible journalism, preserve public trust, and maintain ethical standards as AI becomes increasingly integrated into India’s broadcasting industry.
