Kerala Government Orders Comprehensive Probe Into Wayanad Landslide

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan has announced a detailed investigation into the landslide in Wayanad that claimed three lives on July 7. Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, the Chief Minister said the government will thoroughly examine the factors that led to the tragedy and determine whether any lapses contributed to the incident. The decision was taken during a Cabinet meeting held to review reports submitted by officials following the landslide.

The Chief Minister said the investigation will also assess whether the construction company complied with all environmental conditions and safety guidelines laid down by the Central Government while granting environmental clearance for the tunnel project connecting Wayanad with Kozhikode. He added that authorities would examine reports suggesting the landslide occurred above the tunnel construction site and would take all necessary legal and technical measures to establish the exact cause of the disaster.

Satheesan further announced that work on the Wayanad–Kozhikode tunnel project will remain suspended until both the geological investigation and the compliance review are completed. The state government has assured that construction will resume only after experts determine the cause of the landslide and confirm that all required environmental and safety standards have been properly followed, with the aim of preventing similar incidents in the future.
