Seven Workers Killed After Massive Rock Collapse at Stone Quarry Near Bengaluru

A tragic accident at a stone quarry on the outskirts of Bengaluru claimed the lives of seven workers and left at least five others injured on Thursday after a massive boulder collapsed during excavation work. The incident occurred at a quarry operated by Kaveri Company in Madapattana village, where workers were engaged in routine operations involving heavy machinery. According to initial reports, excavation work was being carried out with the help of an excavator positioned at the upper section of the quarry when a huge rock suddenly became dislodged and crashed onto labourers working below. The impact caused widespread devastation at the site, trapping several workers beneath the debris and triggering an immediate emergency response operation.

Rescue teams, police personnel, and senior district officials rushed to the accident site and launched extensive rescue and recovery efforts. One of the surviving labourers told authorities that nearly 18 workers were present at the quarry when the massive boulder, estimated to have fallen from a height of around 40 feet, struck the workers below. Several trapped workers were rescued during the operation, while authorities continued searching through the debris to ensure no one remained buried. Preliminary information indicates that the workers employed at the quarry were natives of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, and officials have begun the process of informing the families of those who lost their lives. Investigators are also working to determine the exact cause of the collapse and whether all mandatory safety regulations were being followed at the site.

Reacting to the tragedy, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar expressed his condolences and stated that the government had already directed officials to conduct a detailed investigation into the incident. He noted that initial findings suggested the collapse may not have been caused by blasting activities but rather by soil erosion and instability within the quarry area. Shivakumar assured that authorities would thoroughly examine whether the quarry had been operating according to established safety norms and regulations. He further announced that the state government would review existing quarrying guidelines and introduce stricter safety measures if necessary to prevent similar incidents in the future. The devastating accident has once again raised serious concerns about workplace safety standards and regulatory enforcement in quarrying operations across the country.
