Maharashtra Cracks Down on Energy Drink Sales Near Schools Amid Health Concerns

Mumbai: In a significant move aimed at protecting the health and well-being of schoolchildren, the Maharashtra government on Friday, July 3, announced a ban on the sale of popular energy drinks such as ‘Sting’ and other intoxicating substances within a 500-metre radius of schools across the state. The decision comes after concerns were raised regarding the ingredients present in energy drinks, particularly their high caffeine and sugar content, which health experts believe may have adverse effects on children and adolescents. The announcement was made by Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Minister Narhari Zirwal while responding to a question raised by BJP MLA Vikram Pachpute during a session of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly.

The state government stated that the restriction has been introduced after increasing concerns over the growing consumption of energy drinks among school-going children. Minister Zirwal informed the Assembly that the Food and Drug Administration has been directed to strictly enforce the new restriction and take immediate action against vendors found violating the rule near educational institutions. He acknowledged that the concerns expressed by legislators regarding the availability of such beverages around schools were justified and emphasized that the government is committed to ensuring a safer environment for students. The minister further noted that energy drinks, due to their stimulating ingredients, are considered unsuitable for children and require closer regulatory oversight.

During the discussion, several legislators, including Rahul Kul and Varun Sardesai, urged the government to adopt even stricter measures to prevent easy access to energy drinks by minors. BJP MLA Vikram Pachpute also questioned whether the government would consider introducing a statewide prohibition on the sale of such beverages to individuals below 18 years of age. In response, Minister Zirwal assured the House that the government would intensify awareness campaigns in schools to educate students about the potential health risks associated with excessive consumption of energy drinks. He reiterated that alongside enforcement measures, public awareness and education would play a crucial role in discouraging the consumption of such products among children and adolescents.
