A tragic road accident in northeastern Thailand claimed the lives of eight Buddhist monks and left more than a dozen others injured after an 11-year-old boy allegedly lost control of his parents’ pickup truck and crashed into a religious procession. The incident occurred in Mukdahan province, where a group of 35 monks and five lay followers were participating in a pilgrimage. According to police officials, five monks died instantly at the scene, while three others later succumbed to their injuries in hospital. Images and videos shared online showed saffron robes, personal belongings, and debris scattered along the roadside, highlighting the devastating impact of the collision.
Authorities stated that the boy had reportedly taken the pickup truck without his parents’ permission before losing control of the vehicle and plowing into the procession. Police have launched a full investigation into the crash and have seized the vehicle for forensic examination. Police Major General Pairoj Thaiphutsa said investigators are also questioning the child’s parents to determine legal responsibility and establish whether negligence played a role in the incident. Meanwhile, Mukdahan Hospital has issued an urgent appeal for blood donations as several victims continue to receive treatment. Officials confirmed that four monks remain in critical condition, while at least ten others suffered serious injuries and several more sustained minor wounds.
One of the surviving monks, Phra Sompong, described the horrifying moments leading up to the tragedy, saying he was chanting a meditation mantra when he suddenly noticed the pickup truck speeding toward the group. He recalled that he and another monk managed to jump out of the way just in time, while many others were violently thrown into the air by the impact. The incident has shocked Thailand, where Buddhist monks hold a highly respected position in society and public religious processions are a common cultural practice. Mukdahan Governor Worayan Bunnarat expressed condolences to the victims and emphasized that the tragedy should serve as a stark reminder about the importance of road safety and parental responsibility, urging families and communities to work together to prevent similar accidents in the future.
