The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced three nominees for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections from Jammu and Kashmir, which are set to take place on October 24, 2025. The party has fielded its state unit president, Sat Pal Sharma, along with Ghulam Mohammed Mir and Rakesh Mahajan. The Election Commission of India has issued three separate notifications for elections to four Rajya Sabha seats in the Union Territory, marking a key political contest as regional and national parties prepare for a high-stakes vote.
According to the current assembly strength, the National Conference (NC)-Congress alliance holds a numerical advantage on three of the four seats, while the BJP maintains influence on one. However, the saffron party’s decision to contest all four seats is expected to intensify political maneuvering in the region. Sources suggest that the BJP is planning an aggressive outreach to independent and rival party MLAs in a bid to secure additional votes for its candidates and possibly upset the expected balance in the upper house representation from Jammu and Kashmir.
Earlier, the National Conference had announced the names of its three candidates and confirmed that discussions were ongoing with the Congress regarding the fourth seat. Political observers view the BJP’s move as a strategic attempt to expand its legislative presence in the Union Territory, especially in the backdrop of the ongoing political realignments following the reorganization of Jammu and Kashmir. With both alliances now actively campaigning and lobbying for support, the October 24 election promises to be a closely watched political battle in the region.
