Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district witnessed a grim turn of events as the bodies of three civilians—Yogesh (32), Darshan (40), and Varun (14)—were discovered in the Malhar region’s river on Saturday evening. The victims, reportedly cousins, had gone missing two days earlier while participating in a wedding procession. According to initial reports, they lost their way near the dense Inchhu forests on Thursday night. As tensions rise in the area, Union Minister Jitendra Singh has alleged a deep-rooted terrorist conspiracy aimed at destabilizing the region’s peace. He assured that the Union Home Secretary himself would visit Jammu to assess the situation firsthand. Meanwhile, security forces have been deployed in Kathua, as locals in Billawar town observed a complete shutdown in protest against the killings.

The incident has further escalated security concerns in the region, which has witnessed increasing militant activity in recent months. Notably, this area is close to Badnota, where five Indian soldiers lost their lives in a militant ambush last year. Suspecting foul play, security forces had launched search operations for the missing individuals soon after they were reported lost. While the cause of death is yet to be officially determined, local MLA Rameshwar Singh has drawn attention to growing unrest in the region, pointing to multiple cases of civilian deaths under controversial circumstances. His claims include allegations of police high-handedness in previous cases, such as the death of Gujjar youth Makhan Din, who reportedly died by suicide after allegedly being coerced by the police. When Singh attempted to meet the victims’ families at the Billawar sub-district hospital, he was manhandled by angry protesters, highlighting the mounting public outrage.

In response to the escalating crisis, senior officials from the police, paramilitary forces, and security agencies have been called for an urgent security review. However, political leaders and residents continue to demand accountability and concrete measures to prevent further loss of civilian lives.
