Supreme Court Takes Up Plea Over Controversial KPCC Post Against CJI

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has formally registered a petition seeking contempt proceedings against the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) over a controversial social media post targeting Chief Justice of India Surya Kant. The petition originated from a complaint filed by advocate Vineet Jindal on October 13, which was converted into a writ petition on October 30. Besides seeking action over the social media post, the complaint also requested the court to examine whether a political demonstration involving Rahul Gandhi and other leaders inside the Supreme Court premises on October 12 was held without authorization and whether it disrupted the movement of advocates, litigants, court staff, or judicial officers.

The controversy began after a post published from the official Congress Keralam account on X went viral on October 12, drawing widespread criticism across social media platforms. The post was later deleted, and the KPCC removed the individual responsible for publishing it. In an official statement, KPCC President Sunny Joseph clarified that the message had been posted without the knowledge, approval, or consultation of the party’s leadership. He further emphasized that the Congress party has no disagreement regarding the impartiality of the judiciary and reiterated the party’s respect for judicial institutions.

With the petition now officially before the Supreme Court, the matter is expected to undergo judicial scrutiny to determine whether the social media post and the events alleged in the complaint warrant contempt proceedings or any further legal action. The case has attracted significant attention as it raises important questions about the limits of political expression, accountability for official party communications, and the need to maintain the dignity and independence of the country’s highest judicial institution while balancing constitutional rights.
