Tensions Flare in Mumbai After Bakrid Sacrifice Shed Demolished

Communal tensions erupted in Mumbai’s Mira Road area late Monday night after a temporary shed built for Bakrid animal sacrifice inside Poonam Cluster Society was demolished following complaints from right-wing groups. According to reports, members of the Muslim community had arranged the shed for goat sacrifices ahead of Eid al-Adha, but several Hindu organisations objected, alleging that the animals were being kept illegally inside the residential complex. Acting on complaints, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) demolished the structure, leading to anger and confrontation at the site.

The situation escalated when members of Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal gathered near the society in large numbers after reports emerged that locals were attempting to rebuild the shed. Videos circulating on social media showed heated arguments, scuffles, and injured individuals during the clash, while slogans were raised by protesters as police tried to disperse the crowd. Eyewitnesses claimed tensions remained high for a considerable time before police forces managed to bring the situation under control and prevent further violence.

On Tuesday morning, protests continued outside the housing society, with right-wing groups demanding that goats allegedly kept inside the premises be removed immediately. Protesters argued that authorities had already designated separate spaces for Bakrid sacrifices and questioned why animals were brought into the society compound. Heavy police deployment remains in place around the area to maintain law and order, while officials have so far avoided giving detailed statements regarding the incident and ongoing investigation.
