Siddaramaiah Steps Down as Karnataka CM, Emotional Farewell Marks End of Era

Bengaluru: Karnataka politics witnessed a dramatic and emotional development on Thursday as senior Congress leader officially resigned from the post of Chief Minister, bringing his second tenure to an end. The resignation came after days of intense political speculation and internal discussions within the Congress party regarding leadership change in the state. Before submitting his resignation, Siddaramaiah held a final meeting with cabinet ministers and close aides at his official residence ‘Kaveri’, where several leaders reportedly became emotional while recalling his long political journey and contribution to Karnataka politics. Despite the tense atmosphere, Siddaramaiah remained calm and urged party leaders to stay united and continue working together.

The outgoing Chief Minister later proceeded to Lok Bhavan and submitted his resignation letter to the Governor’s Special Secretary, as Governor was away from Bengaluru at the time. Sources stated that the resignation will become officially effective once the Governor formally accepts and signs it as per constitutional procedure. According to party insiders, Siddaramaiah stepped down following directions from the Congress high command and after discussions involving senior leader . His deputy is now expected to take charge as the next Chief Minister under the reported rotational power-sharing arrangement within the Congress.

Siddaramaiah’s political journey is considered one of the most remarkable transformations in Karnataka politics. Born into a poor farmer’s family in Mysuru district, he started his career in the Janata Parivar and remained strongly anti-Congress for decades before joining the Congress party in 2006 after his fallout with JD(S) leadership led by former Prime Minister . Over the years, Siddaramaiah established himself as a powerful backward classes leader through the AHINDA movement and eventually became Karnataka’s longest-serving Chief Minister. During his tenure, he gained popularity for welfare guarantee schemes, though his government also faced criticism and allegations related to the MUDA land allotment issue. With his resignation, another major chapter in Karnataka’s political history has formally come to a close.
