Seven Devotees Killed, Several Injured in Stampede at Bihar’s Ashok Dham Temple

At least seven devotees lost their lives and several others were injured in a stampede at the Ashok Dham Temple in Bihar’s Lakhisarai district on Monday morning. The tragedy occurred around 6:30 a.m. as thousands of devotees gathered to offer water to Lord Shiva on the third Monday of the holy month of Shravan, one of the busiest days for temple visits. According to police officials, a section of the barricades collapsed under the pressure of the massive crowd, causing people to fall over one another and triggering panic. Rescue teams, police personnel and district officials rushed to the spot and shifted the injured to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos as the crowd surged toward the temple entrance. One devotee said several women forcefully entered the queue, leading to heavy pushing that caused dozens of people to fall. Many devotees reportedly fainted after getting trapped beneath the crowd, making rescue efforts more difficult. Authorities are continuing to verify the identities of the deceased and injured while investigating the exact circumstances that led to the stampede. The incident has once again raised concerns about crowd management and safety arrangements at major religious gatherings during peak festival periods.

President Droupadi Murmu expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and extended her condolences to the bereaved families while wishing a speedy recovery to those injured. Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary described the incident as “extremely tragic and heart-wrenching” and announced an ex gratia payment of ₹4 lakh for the family of each deceased devotee. He also directed officials to ensure the injured receive immediate and proper medical treatment. The state administration has launched relief operations and is expected to review the safety measures in place for large religious events to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
