Several protesters were detained in New Delhi on Sunday as demonstrations continued for a second consecutive day over demands for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Protesters gathered at Connaught Place and Rajiv Chowk before attempting to march towards Jantar Mantar while raising slogans against the Election Commission chief. Police personnel stopped the march, leading to detentions as authorities enforced extensive security arrangements across the area to prevent demonstrators from reaching the protest site.
Among those detained was CPI(M) MP John Brittas, who was also taken into custody during the previous day’s protest. Members of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and several other student organisations were also detained while participating in the march. Some protesters alleged they were manhandled during the police action, while SFI leaders claimed several activists sustained injuries during the detentions. Videos circulating from the protest showed clashes between demonstrators and security personnel as police escorted detainees to buses stationed nearby.
The protest was organised after the CJP renewed its call for demonstrations at Jantar Mantar despite heavy restrictions imposed across the national capital. According to reports, thousands of police and paramilitary personnel were deployed to maintain law and order. The protesters and several opposition leaders have been demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over allegations related to the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. Police continued to monitor the situation closely as investigations and security measures remained in place throughout the city.
