Hyderabad: All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) president and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi has officially announced his party’s backing for the opposition’s vice-presidential candidate, Justice B. Sudershan Reddy. The announcement came on Saturday after the Telangana Chief Minister’s Office reached out to Owaisi, requesting AIMIM’s support in the September 9 vice-presidential election. In a post shared on X, the AIMIM chief confirmed that his party would stand behind Reddy, describing him as a “fellow Hyderabadi and a respected jurist.”

Owaisi elaborated that he personally spoke to Justice Reddy, a former Supreme Court judge, and conveyed his best wishes for the upcoming contest. “@TelanganaCMO spoke to me today and requested that we support Justice Sudershan Reddy as Vice President. @aimim_national will extend its support to Justice Reddy, a fellow Hyderabadi and a respected jurist. I also spoke to Justice Reddy and expressed our best wishes to him,” Owaisi posted. The Hyderabad MP emphasized that his party’s decision was influenced both by the appeal from the Telangana government and by Justice Reddy’s reputation in the legal and political spheres.

The AIMIM, which is represented in the Lok Sabha solely by Owaisi, holds a decisive voice in several electoral matters despite its limited parliamentary presence. By extending support to the opposition’s nominee, the party has once again highlighted its independent role in national politics while maintaining strong regional commitments. The move is being closely watched in political circles, as it signals the importance of Hyderabad’s influence in shaping alliances at the national level.
