Residents of Hyderabad’s Old City finally received a Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) on Tuesday, September 16, after long-standing demands for easier access to passport services. The new facility was inaugurated at the Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station (MGBS) Metro building in the presence of AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi. However, officials clarified that this was not an entirely new PSK but a relocation of the existing Ameerpet centre, which has now been shifted to MGBS. Despite this, the move has been widely welcomed by Old City residents, many of whom previously had to travel long distances for passport-related services.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) emphasized that the relocation aims to ensure the continuity of services rather than an expansion of infrastructure. Apart from this shift, the Tolichowki PSK will also be moved to the Siri building in Raidurg, while the Begumpet PSK will continue to operate without any changes. Together, these centres are expected to serve the city’s growing population more effectively, especially those in southern Hyderabad who often faced difficulties accessing passport services at distant locations.
Officials believe the move will significantly reduce travel time and improve convenience for thousands of applicants in the Old City. With passport-related appointments often booked weeks in advance, the accessibility of the new MGBS facility is expected to streamline the process and ease congestion at other centres. While the shift does not increase the overall number of passport offices in Hyderabad, the reallocation is seen as a step toward decentralizing services and balancing the workload across the city.
