Mobile Phone Torch Used as Makeshift Headlight on Karnataka State Bus, Video Sparks Safety Concerns

A video allegedly showing a state-run bus operating without functional headlights in Karnataka’s Kalaburagi district has gone viral on social media, triggering widespread concern over passenger safety and the condition of public transportation services. The video reportedly captures a Kalyana Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (KKRTC) bus traveling on the Kalaburagi–Chincholi route late at night, with its headlights said to be malfunctioning. In the footage, the bus conductor can allegedly be seen using the flashlight of a mobile phone to illuminate the road ahead while the driver continues operating the vehicle, raising serious questions about safety protocols and maintenance standards.

According to reports, the incident took place on Saturday night during the bus’s scheduled journey from Kalaburagi to Chincholi, a route spanning approximately 84 kilometers. The purported footage shows the bus traveling in near-total darkness, with the conductor attempting to assist the driver by directing the light from a mobile phone toward the road. The incident has sparked concern among commuters and the general public, with many questioning how a passenger vehicle carrying travelers was allowed to continue its journey despite an apparent technical failure. As of now, transport authorities have not issued an official statement regarding the authenticity of the video or the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The incident has also drawn sharp criticism from opposition parties in Karnataka, which have accused the state government of failing to maintain adequate safety standards in the public transportation system. Opposition leaders argued that the alleged incident reflects deeper issues within the state’s transport infrastructure and called for an immediate investigation into the matter. They have demanded strict action against those found responsible and urged authorities to ensure that all public transport vehicles undergo proper maintenance and safety inspections to prevent similar incidents in the future.
