IMD Issues Red Alert for Mumbai Region as Heavy Rain and Strong Winds Trigger Major Safety Concerns

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday issued a red alert for Mumbai, Thane, and Raigad districts after intensifying weather conditions raised concerns over severe rainfall and strong winds across the region. The weather agency upgraded its earlier orange alert to a red alert after observing significant changes in atmospheric conditions and warned residents to avoid non-essential travel. According to the IMD, the affected areas are likely to witness heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by wind speeds reaching 70 to 80 kilometres per hour, posing a serious threat to public safety and transportation services. Meanwhile, neighbouring Palghar district remains under an orange alert, with forecasts predicting heavy rainfall and strong winds in several locations.

The IMD cautioned that the intense rainfall could lead to widespread waterlogging in low-lying urban areas, flash floods, river flooding, and the overflow of roads and bridges. Authorities have also warned of the possibility of landslides, mudslides, and rockfalls in vulnerable regions, while aging and structurally weak buildings may face the risk of collapse. Rough sea conditions along the Konkan coast have prompted additional warnings for fishermen and coastal residents. The weather department further stated that road, railway, air, and ferry services could face disruptions, while essential services such as electricity and water supply may also be affected. Thunderstorms accompanied by cloud-to-ground lightning are expected, increasing the risk to people working outdoors and those sheltering near tall structures or electrical installations.

In response to the deteriorating weather conditions, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has urged residents to remain indoors unless travel is absolutely necessary and to avoid beaches, waterlogged areas, trees, electric poles, hoardings, and dilapidated structures. The civic body stated that nearly 15,000 officials and personnel from various government departments have been deployed across Mumbai to manage emergency situations and monitor developments around the clock. Authorities have advised commuters to check official traffic updates before travelling and urged citizens to rely solely on verified government advisories instead of rumours circulating on social media. Farmers have also been advised to harvest mature crops, secure stored produce, avoid irrigation activities, and keep livestock sheltered as authorities prepare for the possibility of severe weather-related disruptions in the coming days.
