Massive Search Operation Underway in Manipur After Dozens Held Hostage

Security forces in Manipur have intensified combing and search operations across the remote hill terrains of Kangpokpi district after armed groups allegedly abducted more than 38 people earlier this month. According to police officials, rescue teams are actively searching the forest and hill regions surrounding Leilon Vaiphei, Songtun, Khunkho, and P Molding villages. Sniffer dogs have also been deployed as authorities continue efforts to trace those still missing and secure the release of remaining hostages.

The incident reportedly took place on May 13, just hours after three church leaders were shot dead in an ambush in Kangpokpi district, further escalating tensions in the violence-hit state. Officials confirmed that 31 abducted individuals have already been released, while operations are still ongoing to rescue the others believed to be in captivity. The situation has raised fresh concerns over the worsening law and order conditions and growing ethnic tensions in parts of Manipur.

Meanwhile, community organisations have made emotional appeals to the government for immediate action. A leader from the Liangmai Naga community met Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh and stated that even if the missing people are no longer alive, their bodies should at least be returned to their families. On the other hand, Kuki Inpi-Manipur, the apex body representing Kuki tribes in the state, claimed that 14 members of the Kuki community are also being held hostage by Naga groups, highlighting the deepening mistrust and conflict between communities in the region.
