Mahua Moitra Criticizes Union Government and Judiciary in Fiery Lok Sabha Speech

In a searing Lok Sabha address marking 75 years of the Constitution, Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra launched a pointed critique of the Union government, accusing it of systematically eroding democracy over the last decade. Moitra alleged that the political executive had orchestrated a gradual assault on democratic institutions, contrasting it with the overt attack during the Emergency under Indira Gandhi. She accused the government of voter disenfranchisement, electoral malpractices, and introducing discriminatory legislation such as the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, which she argued marginalized minorities and violated the constitutional principle of equality before the law.

Moitra also targeted the judiciary, indirectly criticizing former Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud. She questioned his claims of prioritizing bail rights, alleging selective justice for certain high-profile individuals while ignoring others. Moitra took issue with the CJI’s hosting of Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his residence, suggesting it undermined judicial independence. She emphasized that judges must uphold constitutional principles above personal relationships or public perception. Her comments about the death of Judge BH Loya and the alleged biases within the judiciary sparked uproar in the House, with Union Minister Kiren Rijiju warning of “appropriate parliamentary action” against her.

Continuing her critique, Moitra accused BJP-led state governments of indulging in “bulldozer justice” by demolishing minority homes without due legal process. She highlighted concerns over the Election Commission’s independence, pointing to resignations of election commissioners and alleged biases during elections. Referring to the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, she accused the government of stifling free speech in the region. Moitra concluded by stating that the Constitution was “bleeding from a thousand cuts” under the current administration, accusing it of betraying democratic accountability while also denouncing probe agencies for targeting her in a politically motivated investigation.
