KTR Alleges Congress Planning To Scrap Free Power Through Prepaid Electricity Meters

BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao launched a sharp attack on the Congress government, accusing it of secretly preparing to end free electricity benefits for farmers by introducing prepaid electricity meters across Telangana. Addressing a party meeting in Amberpet, KTR claimed the government plans to replace existing power meters in both rural and urban areas, including agricultural connections, as part of a larger strategy to privatise the electricity sector and hand over operations to private corporate entities.

KTR alleged that the Congress government is moving ahead with the prepaid meter rollout within the next three months and warned that free power for farmers could eventually disappear if the policy is implemented. He recalled that during the Assembly elections, the BRS had already cautioned people that free electricity schemes would come under threat if Congress assumed power. According to him, former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao had previously resisted pressure from the Centre to introduce prepaid meters despite financial challenges and loan-related restrictions.

The former minister also accused the Congress administration of failing on governance, civic management, and election promises while criticising demolition drives carried out under HYDRAA and the Musi rejuvenation project. KTR claimed thousands of poor families were being affected in the name of development and alleged that major infrastructure projects were now being used for political contracts and commissions. He further announced that the BRS would soon begin digital membership enrolment and intensive cadre training programmes ahead of future municipal elections in Hyderabad.
