India marked a historic milestone in its defence programme by successfully test-firing the new generation nuclear-capable ballistic missile, Agni-P, from a rail-based mobile launcher off the coast of Odisha. Conducted by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) at Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island, the launch showcased India’s growing expertise in strategic missile technology. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO scientists, highlighting that this first-of-its-kind test from a specially designed mobile rail system will significantly enhance India’s ability to mobilize and launch missiles at short notice with reduced detection risks.
The Agni-P missile is a canisterised system designed for easy transportation and storage, enabling rapid deployment while minimizing preparation time. It incorporates cutting-edge technology such as a ring laser gyro-based Inertial Navigation System (INS), a micro INS (MINS), and optional integration with GPS and India’s own NaVIC satellite navigation system, ensuring pinpoint accuracy. Having already proven its reliability in previous trials, the Agni-P further consolidates India’s deterrence posture against potential threats, offering cross-country mobility and operational flexibility that makes it difficult for adversaries to track or neutralize.
This test adds to a string of successful missile trials in recent months, reflecting India’s steady progress in strengthening its strategic arsenal. On August 20, India had test-fired the Agni-5 intermediate-range ballistic missile, capable of striking targets up to 5,000 km away, covering nearly all of Asia and parts of Europe. Prior to that, the Prithvi-II and Agni-I were also successfully tested, signaling a comprehensive upgrade across multiple ranges of India’s missile systems. Together, these advancements underline New Delhi’s commitment to enhancing both offensive and defensive capabilities, reinforcing its status as a formidable power in the evolving global security landscape.
