INDIA Bloc MPs March to Election Commission, Demand CEC Gyanesh Kumar’s Resignation

New Delhi: Members of Parliament from the INDIA bloc on Tuesday marched from Parliament to the Election Commission of India (ECI) headquarters, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The protest, led by Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, took place amid heavy security deployment across central Delhi, with police barricades and personnel stationed along the route. As the MPs advanced towards the ECI office, security forces stopped the march near the NITI Aayog office.

Opposition leaders accused the Election Commission of compromising its credibility and questioned the handling of voter roll revisions. They cited recent observations made by the Supreme Court regarding changes to Form 6, the statutory application used for voter enrolment, claiming the Commission had misrepresented the court’s position. Several leaders, including Congress MP Imran Masood, CPI MP P. Sandosh Kumar and Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut, alleged that public trust in the Election Commission had been damaged and demanded accountability from the Chief Election Commissioner.

The protest comes as the Supreme Court continues hearing a petition challenging alleged unilateral decisions related to the electoral revision process. The apex court recently stated that it had not approved any modified version of Form 6 and would examine official records to determine whether unauthorized changes had been made. While opposition parties have intensified their campaign against the SIR exercise and called for Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation, the Election Commission has denied allegations of irregularities, maintaining that all decisions regarding the revision process were taken unanimously by the full Commission.
