Electricity Bills in Telangana Likely to Increase from November

Hyderabad: Electricity consumers across Telangana may have to pay higher power bills from November after the Telangana Electricity Regulatory Commission (TGERC) approved the recovery of pending true-up dues. Around Rs 5,420 crore will be collected through monthly electricity bills over a period of more than two years. Initially, an additional charge of 30 paise per unit will be imposed, which will later be increased to 50 paise per unit.

The recovery relates to power purchase and revenue adjustments for the financial years 2022–23 and 2023–24. While the total approved true-up amount stands at Rs 7,635 crore, agricultural consumers have been exempted from paying the additional charges. The Telangana government has been directed to reimburse Rs 2,214 crore towards the free electricity supplied to farmers. The remaining amount will be recovered from non-agricultural consumers by TGSPDCL and TGNPDCL.

The additional charge will appear as a separate “True-Up” entry in monthly electricity bills. Before the recovery begins, the TGERC has instructed both power distribution companies to issue public notices informing consumers about the revised billing. The increase is expected to affect residential, commercial, and other non-agricultural electricity users across Hyderabad and the rest of Telangana.
