Hyderabad Police to Intensify Drunk Driving Checks From Wednesday Ahead of New Year

Hyderabad Commissioner of Police VC Sajjanar on Tuesday announced that a special drive against drunk driving will be carried out across the city from Wednesday until New Year’s Day. The decision comes as part of enhanced security and safety arrangements for Christmas and New Year celebrations. Sajjanar warned that strict legal action would be taken against anyone found violating traffic and safety norms.

Reviewing the arrangements during a teleconference with field-level officers, the Commissioner directed police officials to maintain tight security at identified hotspots and party zones. He said drunk driving checks would be conducted at around 100 locations across Hyderabad on New Year’s Eve, with additional police personnel deployed from the seventh platoon to manage enforcement and crowd control.

Highlighting the penalties, Sajjanar said offenders caught during drunk driving checks would face a fine of up to ₹10,000 and imprisonment of up to six months. He added that driving licences of repeat or serious offenders could also be cancelled permanently. The Commissioner further warned of strict action against those involved in rash driving, racing, and dangerous stunts. To ensure women’s safety during celebrations, the Hyderabad police will deploy 15 SHE Teams at party venues and other sensitive locations. Urging citizens to cooperate, Sajjanar appealed to the public to celebrate New Year’s Eve responsibly and safely.
