The Hyderabad Traffic Police are considering a new technology-driven system that would allow traffic challans to be recovered directly from motorists’ FASTag accounts. The proposal, currently under discussion with the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA), aims to improve compliance with traffic rules and make the enforcement process more efficient. Cyberabad Traffic Joint Commissioner of Police Sunpreet Singh said the initiative is part of a broader effort to use technology to strengthen road safety and reduce dependence on conventional enforcement methods.
Speaking at the Society for Cyberabad Security Council’s (SCSC) 20th anniversary event, Singh said authorities are exploring innovative ways to encourage responsible driving behaviour. While acknowledging that financial penalties can discourage violations, he noted that fines alone may not bring lasting behavioural change. He stressed that technology can help identify offenders more effectively, promote responsible road use, and contribute to building a safer traffic culture across Hyderabad. A final decision on the FASTag-linked challan system will depend on HMDA’s response after ongoing discussions.
The Cyberabad Traffic Police also highlighted the growing transportation challenges facing Hyderabad as the city continues to expand rapidly. Singh said improving public transport integration, strengthening last-mile connectivity, and developing more multi-level parking facilities are essential to reducing congestion and road accidents. He added that safer roads can only be achieved through close cooperation between government agencies, police, technology partners, and citizens, with smart enforcement playing a key role in the city’s future traffic management strategy.
