on Wednesday submitted his resignation to Assam Governor after the BJP-led NDA secured a massive victory in the Assam Assembly elections. Following the resignation at Lok Bhawan in Guwahati, the Governor asked Sarma and his council of ministers to continue as a caretaker government until the formation of the new administration. Sources indicated that Sarma is most likely to return as Chief Minister once the BJP legislature party formally elects its leader.
Speaking to reporters after resigning, Sarma confirmed that the Governor had accepted the resignation and allowed the outgoing government to continue temporarily during the transition period. He also thanked the Governor for his guidance over the past five years and said the BJP-led NDA would soon return to stake claim to form the next government. Senior BJP leaders and have been appointed as central observers to oversee the selection of the next legislature party leader in Assam.
Meanwhile, preparations for the oath-taking ceremony are already underway, with sources claiming that the swearing-in is expected to take place on May 12 in the presence of Prime Minister . BJP ally Asom Gana Parishad also held its legislative meeting in Guwahati and unanimously supported Sarma’s continuation as Chief Minister. The NDA’s strong election victory has once again strengthened the BJP’s position in Assam, with the leadership transition now expected to be completed within the next few days.
