Heavy Rains Batter Hyderabad: 1,000 Evacuated as Musi River Swells

Hyderabad witnessed chaos after continuous heavy rains lashed the city and adjoining districts of Telangana, forcing authorities to evacuate nearly 1,000 residents from low-lying areas to safer relief camps. Officials confirmed that food, water, and other essential supplies were being provided to the displaced families as the Musi river remained in spate. The sudden inflow of floodwaters disrupted normal life, with several neighborhoods submerged, leaving citizens stranded and struggling to navigate the inundated streets.

One of the worst-affected areas was the Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station (MGBS), one of Telangana’s largest public transport hubs, where floodwaters entered the complex. Bus services were temporarily suspended, and stranded passengers were escorted to safety. Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) Managing Director V.C. Sajjanar announced that buses originally scheduled to operate from MGBS were being rerouted to alternative city points. The corporation also appealed to the public not to visit MGBS until the situation stabilizes, highlighting the extent of disruption caused by the relentless rainfall.

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy reviewed the situation closely, directing officials to take all precautionary steps and continue monitoring areas along the Musi river. He emphasized the need to shift vulnerable communities to relief camps without delay and ensure uninterrupted supply of essential commodities. The crisis deepened after authorities opened the gates of the twin reservoirs — Himayatsagar and Osmansagar — to release excess water, which further raised Musi’s levels. The IMD forecast heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds across several Telangana districts on September 27, prompting the government to remain on high alert for potential flooding and further evacuations.
