A drink-and-drive enforcement operation in Hyderabad’s Chandrayangutta turned violent after a Rapido bike taxi rider allegedly attacked a traffic police constable. The incident took place on the night of October 23 near Chandrayangutta Chowrasta, where traffic personnel were conducting routine drunken-driving inspections. According to police, the rider, identified as Azeez, was stopped for checking but refused to cooperate with officials when asked to undergo a breathalyser test. Instead of complying with the inspection, he allegedly created a disturbance and attempted to flee from the spot.
As police personnel tried to stop him, the situation escalated dramatically. Officials alleged that Azeez bit the finger of traffic constable Naveen Babu during the confrontation, leaving the officer injured. The constable was immediately shifted to a hospital for medical treatment. Following a complaint lodged by Chandrayangutta Sub-Inspector Sridhar Goud, police registered a case against the accused. Authorities later contacted the rider’s family and served him legal notices, while the investigation into the incident remains underway.
The incident comes amid Hyderabad Traffic Police’s intensified crackdown on drunken driving across the city. During a special enforcement drive conducted over the October 23–24 weekend, police booked 481 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol, including two-wheeler, four-wheeler, three-wheeler and heavy-vehicle drivers. Officials have reiterated that drunken driving poses a serious threat to public safety and warned that anyone responsible for a fatal accident while driving under the influence of alcohol could face prosecution under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, with punishment extending up to 10 years of imprisonment.
