Delhi High Court Judge Under Scrutiny Following Cash Discovery Amid Residence Fire

Delhi High Court Judge Justice Yashwant Varma, who has been embroiled in controversy following the discovery of a significant cash stash at his residence after a fire incident, did not appear in court on Friday. The incident, which took place on March 14, has raised serious questions within judicial circles, prompting discussions on administrative actions. During a hearing, Chief Justice D.K. Upadhyaya acknowledged concerns raised by senior lawyers, stating that the court was “conscious” of the developments. Senior Advocate Arun Bhardwaj, addressing the court, emphasized that the issue had deeply unsettled members of the legal fraternity. However, official responses have remained scarce, with Delhi Fire Service and Delhi Police offering minimal details beyond confirming the fire and its rapid extinguishing.

Despite the mounting speculation, neither Justice Varma nor his office has issued a public statement regarding the allegations. Reports indicate that authorities discovered bundles of cash at his residence, triggering an internal judicial review. The Delhi Fire Service reported that the fire primarily affected “stationery and domestic articles,” without commenting on the presence of money. The police, too, have refrained from making any definitive statements, only confirming that a diary entry had been made regarding the incident. Justice Varma, who was appointed to the Delhi High Court in 2021 after serving at the Allahabad High Court, holds key administrative positions, including chairmanship of the Arbitration Committee and the Legal Services Committee. His influence within the judiciary, coupled with his involvement in crucial financial and budgetary matters, has intensified scrutiny over the situation.

Justice Varma has presided over high-profile cases, including granting bail to Dr. Kafeel Khan in 2018 and handling significant taxation disputes. His absence from court amid the controversy has further fueled concerns about judicial transparency. The incident has drawn parallels with previous instances where sitting judges faced allegations of misconduct, sparking debates about accountability within the judiciary. While calls for an independent inquiry grow louder, officials remain tight-lipped about whether disciplinary proceedings will follow. The legal community awaits further developments, as the implications of this case could extend beyond an individual judge, raising broader questions about integrity and oversight in India’s judicial system.
