A communal clash broke out between two groups during Deepawali celebrations at Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) in Delhi on Tuesday night, October 22. The incident allegedly involved outsiders, including senior RSS and ABVP leaders, who participated in the event and raised communal slogans, heckling Muslim students ¹. The police used lathicharge to disperse the crowd, but students claimed that the police used force on those who objected to allowing outsiders and misbehaved with female students.
The Student Federation of India (SFI) condemned the incident, alleging that outsiders chanted ‘Jai Shri Ram’ slogans and harassed female students. The JMI Alumni Association for Minorities also denounced the incident, terming it an attempt to create a ‘Hinduphobic’ environment ¹. The association stated that this was not an isolated incident and demanded a fair investigation and strict actions against the culprits.
[news_related_post]No complaint has been received so far, according to the police. However, police personnel have been deployed outside the university gate and around the campus as a precautionary measure ¹. The incident has raised concerns about a broader agenda to sow religious discord amongst students.
