The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has confirmed that it will not form an alliance with the Congress for the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections. AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal clarified the party’s stance through a post on X, stating, “Aam Aadmi Party will be fighting this election on its own strength in Delhi. There is no possibility of any alliance with Congress.” This announcement ends months of speculation about a potential collaboration to challenge the BJP in the national capital. The Congress, too, had previously declared its decision to contest all 70 seats independently, but rumors of a last-minute agreement between the two parties persisted until Kejriwal’s clarification.
In recent months, AAP has ramped up its campaign efforts, treating the upcoming polls as a referendum on its governance. Kejriwal’s government has rolled out several initiatives to woo voters, including a series of guarantees for autorickshaw drivers. These promises include a ₹10 lakh life insurance scheme, ₹1 lakh assistance for weddings of their daughters, a ₹2,500 uniform allowance twice a year, and free coaching for their children preparing for competitive exams. As part of its preparations, AAP has announced 31 candidates for the elections, showcasing its determination to contest solo and rely on its policies and achievements.
This isn’t the first time AAP has declined an alliance with Congress. Similar decisions were made during the Haryana Assembly polls and the Punjab Lok Sabha elections. Political analysts suggest that both parties’ inability to reach a seat-sharing agreement underscores their mutual reluctance to cooperate. With Congress and AAP now poised to compete independently, the Delhi elections are expected to witness a three-way battle, potentially benefiting the BJP as opposition votes split between the two rivals.
