President’s Rule in Manipur Extended for Six More Months Amid Parliamentary Uproar

Parliament has approved the extension of President’s Rule in Manipur for another six months beyond August 13, 2025. The resolution, initially passed by the Lok Sabha, was cleared by the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday despite strong protests from the Opposition, particularly over the electoral rolls issue in Bihar. Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh underscored that it was a “constitutional obligation” to pass the resolution, as tensions rose in the House.

While presenting the resolution, Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai explained that the current instability in Manipur stemmed from a court order, which created divisions between two communities. He rejected claims that the violence was communal, saying, “Those who say it is communal violence are wrong.” According to Rai, only one incident of violence has been reported since President’s Rule was imposed eight months ago, suggesting that the situation has relatively stabilized under the Centre’s administration.

The Rajya Sabha eventually approved the resolution through a voice vote, concluding the debate despite the continuing uproar. Manipur has remained a sensitive region due to deep-rooted ethnic and political tensions, and the extension of central rule reflects the government’s position that the state is not yet ready for self-governance. The passage of the resolution extends Delhi’s administrative control and highlights the challenges in restoring peace and democratic normalcy in the state.
