Masab Tank Flyover to Undergo Night Repairs for 6 Weeks, GHMC Begins Citywide Bridge Inspections

Hyderabad’s busy Masab Tank flyover will be partially closed during nighttime hours for the next six weeks as the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) begins crucial structural maintenance on the decades-old structure. The flyover, which plays a vital role in connecting Mehdipatnam with central Hyderabad, was inaugurated in 2001 and has since become one of the city’s key traffic lifelines. Authorities say the scheduled repair work is aimed at replacing the worn-out strip seal joints to prevent rainwater seepage and ensure long-term stability, especially with monsoon conditions worsening road infrastructure.

According to officials, the phased closure will take place between 10:00 PM and 7:00 AM, affecting traffic movement on one side of the flyover at a time. Commuters traveling from Mahavir Hospital towards NMDC are advised to use the parallel service road during these hours. Once repairs on one side are completed, work will begin on the opposite carriageway. The GHMC says the temporary inconvenience is necessary to prevent larger structural failures in the future, and coordination with the traffic police has been initiated to minimize disruption for late-night travelers and emergency vehicles.

In a broader initiative to safeguard public infrastructure, the GHMC is also planning to inspect over 40 flyovers and road-over-bridges (ROBs) across the city. An external expert agency will be hired to carry out detailed structural assessments and submit reports to the GHMC Commissioner. Among the list of flyovers under review are high-traffic routes such as Gachibowli, Punjagutta, Tarnaka, Tolichowki, Begumpet, and Chaderghat, many of which are over a decade old. With Hyderabad expanding rapidly, authorities are under increasing pressure to maintain aging transport infrastructure and prevent major breakdowns that could severely impact daily life and public safety.
