Sheikh Hasina Vows to Return as Bangladesh PM, Awami League Thanks India for Support

Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has vowed to return to power after being ousted in a student-led movement that erupted into violent protests, leaving over 600 dead. The 77-year-old leader fled to India in August 2024 when her 16-year rule under the Awami League came to an abrupt end. An interim government, led by Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus, took over amid growing unrest. US Awami League Vice President Dr. Rabbi Alam expressed confidence that Hasina would regain her position and thanked India for sheltering her and other Awami League leaders during the crisis. He also called for international intervention, labeling the situation in Bangladesh as a “terrorist uprising” rather than a political movement.

Alam, a close aide of Hasina, accused the new administration of exploiting the youth and misleading them into toppling the long-standing Awami League government. “The young generation has made a mistake, but that’s not their fault. They have been manipulated,” he stated. He also urged the interim government’s key figures to step down, insisting that Hasina’s leadership would be restored. Expressing gratitude to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Alam acknowledged India’s role in ensuring Hasina’s safe travel and temporary asylum. Meanwhile, Hasina has remained vocal about her intentions, stating she will fight for justice for those killed during the protests and bring their perpetrators to court once she reclaims power.

During her stay in India, Hasina has openly criticized the interim government, accusing it of failing to stabilize the country. She reassured her supporters that her return is inevitable and that she remains committed to helping the victims’ families. “I shall return. Perhaps that’s why Allah has kept me alive,” she declared. The political landscape in Bangladesh remains tense, with growing calls for her reinstatement. As the international community watches closely, the coming months may determine whether Hasina can make a political comeback or if Bangladesh’s new leadership will manage to consolidate power.
