Former Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal has written to Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, alleging that BJP workers and Delhi Police personnel are attacking and intimidating AAP volunteers in the New Delhi assembly constituency. Kejriwal expressed concerns over what he described as an orchestrated campaign to suppress AAP’s election efforts. He urged the Election Commission (EC) to deploy independent observers to ensure a fair electoral process and demanded the immediate suspension of police officers allegedly involved in these incidents. Additionally, he called for the arrest of BJP workers responsible for the violence, stating that the ruling party at the Centre was using intimidation tactics to weaken AAP’s presence in Delhi.
At a press conference on Sunday, Kejriwal launched an online campaign titled ‘#AmitShahKiGundagardi’ to protest against the alleged violence orchestrated by BJP workers under Union Home Minister Amit Shah. He accused the BJP of trying to coerce AAP leaders and workers into switching allegiances, claiming that even female party members were not spared from intimidation. He emphasized that Delhi has traditionally witnessed peaceful elections and accused the BJP of introducing a culture of political violence. Addressing Amit Shah directly, Kejriwal criticized the BJP for lacking a credible chief ministerial candidate or an agenda for Delhi’s development. He asserted that the people of Delhi would reject these alleged strong-arm tactics and stand against what he termed as “gunda gardi” (hooliganism).
Kejriwal further alleged that BJP workers were openly attacking AAP MLAs and volunteers while the police, acting under political pressure, refused to take any action. Instead, he claimed, the police were filing false cases against AAP members to suppress dissent. He warned that such actions would backfire and strengthen public support for AAP. He reiterated his call for the Election Commission to take immediate steps to ensure a free and fair election, stating that the people of Delhi would not tolerate the misuse of law enforcement agencies for political gains. As the election battle intensifies, Kejriwal positioned himself as a defender of democracy, urging citizens to resist any form of political intimidation.
