A tragic stampede at the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj left 30 people dead and 60 others injured as massive crowds surged towards the Sangam for the sacred Mauni Amavasya snan. The deadly incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday when a wave of pilgrims broke through barricades, leading to a crush that left many trapped and trampled. Despite the tragedy, the religious fervor remained high, with more than 55 lakh devotees taking a holy dip by 8 AM on Thursday. In response, the Uttar Pradesh government has ramped up security and logistical measures, enforcing a strict no-vehicle zone until the crowds disperse. Essential services such as ambulances and police vehicles will continue to operate, but all other traffic has been halted to prevent further congestion.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has ordered a detailed probe into the incident, with senior officials including Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar Singh and DGP Prashant Kumar arriving to assess the situation. Authorities are also deploying additional experienced officers to manage the mela area and prevent further mishaps. Former Prayagraj divisional commissioner Ashish Goyal and former Agra Development Authority vice chairman Bhanu Goswami have been assigned to oversee crowd control measures. With the upcoming Basant Panchami “Amrit Snan” scheduled for February 3, officials are under immense pressure to ensure that safety protocols are strengthened and that another disaster is averted.
Despite the somber mood following the tragedy, many pilgrims expressed gratitude for being part of the Maha Kumbh, with some crediting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and CM Adityanath for the arrangements. Devotees, wrapped in thin blankets, continued to make their way to and from the ghats, navigating through dense fog and freezing temperatures. With footfall exceeding 27 crore since the event began on January 13, the Maha Kumbh remains the world’s largest religious gathering. The festival, which will conclude on February 26, is expected to draw millions more in the coming weeks, making efficient crowd management a top priority for the administration.
