Mohali Building Collapse: Death Toll Rises to Two as Rescue Operations Continue

The death toll in the Mohali building collapse increased to two on Sunday as rescue teams recovered the body of Abhishek Dhanwal, an IT professional from Ambala. The tragic incident occurred when a four-storey building in Sohana crumbled due to excavation work on an adjacent plot. On Saturday, the first casualty, a 20-year-old woman named Drishti from Shimla, succumbed to her injuries. Both victims were residing in the building, which housed a gym on the lower floors and a paying guest (PG) facility on the upper levels.

Rescue operations, led by the NDRF and the Army, have entered their second day, with efforts ongoing to locate three individuals still feared trapped under the rubble. The densely populated area has been cordoned off, and authorities are working around the clock. Deputy Commissioner Aashika Jain assured that the rescue mission would continue until all missing persons are accounted for. Preliminary investigations revealed that the digging work, conducted without proper permissions, caused the structural failure of the building.

Police have arrested the building owners, Parwinder Singh and Gagandeep Singh, on charges of culpable homicide. The incident has raised serious concerns about construction safety norms and regulatory oversight in the area. Municipal Corporation officials confirmed that no authorization was granted for the excavation, highlighting the negligence that led to this disaster. Authorities are urging strict enforcement of construction regulations to prevent such tragedies in the future.
