UNRWA Chief Urges Global Action Against Israel’s ‘Firepower and Propaganda’

Philippe Lazzarini, the head of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), has condemned Israel’s ongoing war on Gaza and its broader assault on human rights advocates. In an opinion piece published in The Guardian, Lazzarini highlighted the challenges faced by aid workers, who are being labeled as “terrorists or sympathizers” for standing up against the violence. He criticized the propaganda campaigns launched by Israel, including inflammatory billboards in the West and misleading Google advertisements, which he says are aimed at deflecting attention from the unlawful occupation and international crimes.

The situation in Gaza has reached catastrophic levels. Over 45,000 Palestinians have been killed, with more than 107,000 injured since October 7, 2023. The relentless Israeli airstrikes have targeted civilians, medics, and critical infrastructure, leading to one of the worst humanitarian crises in recent history. Meanwhile, voices critical of Israel are being silenced through harassment and intimidation, further undermining the fight for justice and accountability. Lazzarini stressed that the world stands at a “crossroads,” where immediate action is necessary to uphold human rights and international law.

The UNRWA chief also called on global leaders to resist the growing influence of propaganda and use the existing tools and institutions to reinforce the rules-based international order. He warned of a future shaped by unchecked firepower and disinformation unless political courage is found to address the escalating crisis. As the death toll continues to rise, with 77 Palestinians killed in a single day, Lazzarini’s plea for global solidarity underscores the urgency of halting the violence and safeguarding human dignity.
