Opposition MPs Protest in Parliament Over Adani Case, Demand JPC Probe

In a symbolic protest during the Winter Session of Parliament on Thursday, December 5, Opposition MPs, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi, wore black jackets bearing the slogan “Modi Adani ek hain” (Modi and Adani are one). The demonstration called for a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) investigation into allegations of bribery and fraud against billionaire Gautam Adani, recently indicted by US prosecutors. The protest, held at the Parliament complex, aimed to highlight perceived inaction on the matter by the Modi government.

Rahul Gandhi, addressing the media, claimed that Prime Minister Modi would not investigate Gautam Adani due to alleged personal connections, stating, “Modi ji can’t get Adani ji investigated because he would be getting himself investigated.” The Congress and other INDIA bloc parties such as AAP, DMK, and the Left rallied together for the protest, while the Trinamool Congress abstained. The opposition MPs argued that the allegations against Adani vindicated their earlier demands for a comprehensive probe into various financial controversies involving the industrialist’s conglomerate.

The Adani Group dismissed the allegations as baseless, and the government has refrained from intervening, calling the issue a “legal matter between private entities and US authorities.” Despite the growing uproar, the Lok Sabha Secretariat advised MPs to avoid protests obstructing Parliament gates, citing safety concerns. This ongoing clash between the government and opposition sets the tone for a heated Winter Session.
